like in this article, i was in school with a guy that continually got put into the next grade. in the eighth grade he was asked to read in front of the class, he was seriously on about a first grade level of reading. it was embarassing to him and very sad. what do we do about students who are continually pushed into the next grade just to get them out? why did knowone, especially teachers did not reach out to this boy and teach him the very basis of our education, how to read.

teresa, that's a really good question. what happened up until 8th grade??? i think that holding a child back should be the last resort because the child's self esteem will plummit if they do not get to move on. They see themselves as stupid and as a failure. it has worked in some cases, probably better in lower elementary grades, like kindergarten or first. however, the older a child gets, the more it will affect them. therefore, it is the teacher's responsibility to help this child learn to read- if a teacher has a child in their classroom that is obviously behind grade level, he/she needs to give him extra help. he needs to practice phonetics individually or in small groups. his assignments need to be altered so he is learning at his own pace. teachers also need to be sensitive so they won't make him read aloud if they know reading is a struggle for him. why embaress the child by making him/her read in front of everyone if that is a huge weakness for him/her? the teacher should also get in touch with the parents and the guidance counselor for advice on extra help. perhaps the child has a reading disability and needs structured alternative activities that are specifically catered towards reading disabilities. the teachers should take action but also be sensitive to the child's needs. maybe this child is a poor reader but excells in science. have that child explain to others scientific methods or model correct safety precautions. this will help the child know that they can succeed and feel good about themselves even if one particular area is a struggle for them.
