So, Black History Month is over. It's time for Women's History Month. The whole thing seems kind of funny to me though. Are we going to have a Native American History Month? An Asian-American History Month? An Hispanic-American History Month? A lower-middle - lower class History Month?

I feel like if we're not celebrating the diversity of everyone, are we really celebrating diversity?

Just a thought. Either divide up the 12 months to give to each individual group, or we should just teach about everybody in our History and English, Art and Music, Science and Math classes.

I see what your saying about not having a month for everyone but I wonder... If there wasnt black history month. Would teachers put black history on the back burner? With so much emphasis on testing in reading and math, do you think teachers would take the time to go over it?

Good point. But how much emphasis in a Math class is put on race. I always learned Math using numbers, not people. The reading thing though. In the curriculum you already read books using African-American males, or Africans as the main characters. "Cry, the Beloved Country", "Invisible Man", etc. The real problem is a real history class. When students only learn about the RWM, rich white males, who owned/operated/ and ran our nation early on, and the plight of slaves, black history, and the achievements of black men are pushed to the backburner. I think this should be worked into the curriculum in schools, which to some extent, already is.

Eventually we will all interbreed until there are no races and everyone speaks a language that is a conglomeration of English, Cantonese, Spanish, and Arabic.

Unless we kill each other first.

The latter is most likely.

yeah, i think it is a little odd that only black history month and women's history month is celebrated. i think we should do a better job incorporating all kinds of people into our subjects. with math, we should do problems that involve history- like if you are studying native american history, use an example about the kinds of tools a particualr tribe used or the different spirits a particular tribe worshipped. that way, the students aren't just doing problems about a hypothetical person in a hypothetical situation. i do agree though that if we didn't have these reminders, teachers might not put as much importance on different cultures. so, i guess it comes down to the path of least resistance. do we need the actual months? or can society be trusted to focus on everyone? that's a good question, i don't know.

I think you all have good points. I think that the intentions to celebrate these months were to show blacks and women that they are socially "accepted" now. But in a way it is saying that blacks and women should have a month focused on them just to make sure that they still know this.

Is it necessary to have these months in 2006, after all these years?

This is a great way to say it! I also agree that it is a way to show that blacks and women are accepted still, but it leaves out everyone else who were not accepted in the earlier years, so is that saying that we don't accept them now? Because if that is the way we look at it then it is!
