Anyone have any views on the new NC lottery? Do you guys think it will be good for education? I know that other states have benefited from lotteries via scholarships and grants. What do you guys think?

I'm not really sure of all the details pertaining to the lottery, but I do konw that it does bring in alot of money for education. Which we all want and need. What I am unsure of is how ethical the situation is and how many addiction cases come from it. Are we putting money on too high of a platform? And does it cause people to be so focused on the winnings that they try to bank on that money? I am not really sure at all how the whole system works or even how they make it fair. But I am interested to see other's veiws on this topic.

I think that the lottery has potential to be a good thing for North Carolina. I'm from Virginia and we already have the lottery. I know of a lot of North Carolinians who come across the state line just to purchase lottery tickets. And, really when you think about it, the people from NC are supporting the VA education fund, instead of their own. So, if they had their own lottery then they would be able to support their own education fund-which I think would be great for NC.

"The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math."

I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with gambling, but it's very easy for poor people to spend way too much money on it. I've already heard stories of people who've spent hundreds of dollars, including what they won, on scratch-off cards in a single day. I can only imagine what it'll be like when we get the Powerball. I do believe that people are personally responsible for how they play, and I know it's already available elsewhere, but I'm still not exactly thrilled about it.

I've heard mixed responses from people in other states who have a lottery-funded education system. Some say that it didn't help anything; lottery money replaced the old education funding instead of supplementing it. Others talked about free field trips to other states and classrooms well equipped with technology and supplies.

I don't know, I guess I'm pretty :? about it. I hope it works out for us.

I have mixed views about the lottery, I feel like Luci and maggie's views are pretty similar to mine. Luci mentioned that a lot of people came across the border to Virginia to purchase lottery tickets. If they are going to buy one, it would be great to give that money to North Carolina's education system rather than Virginia's. However, I also agree with maggie because a lot of people have trouble gambling and end up spending a lot of money. I don't want people to go into debt even though there might be more money pouring into education. it's like we're using people's additions to fund education. i know that many people don't have this problem and can afford to buy a couple tickets and that's fine- it just makes me worried that if it's easier to buy tickets now, are more people going to abuse the privilage?

If the money goes where it is supposed to(and it won't) then I am all for it.The money is usually just distributed around and education doesn't actually benefit from it.

I'm not a big fan. It costs a lot of money to run the lottery (tickets, places to buy them, people to manage it, etc.) and people get addicted. I know we can say that people will drive to bordering states to buy tickets anyway (maybe not now b/c of gas prices), but really the people who usually buy tickets are the poorer people trying to get lucky. I think the fact that it is an education lottery is weird because we probably wouldn't teach our students to spend their money on lottery tickets when they grow up. I just don't think its a good idea.

I think I agree with what everyone else seems to be saying but at the same time I don't know enough about the issue and how it all works. Unfortunatly, I think Maggie is right about how the money from the lottery will be distributed. While it may go to education, I can easily see the state pulling other funding from education and using it for different purposes.

I am not a fan of the lottery. Typically, the poor people play the lottery hoping to strike it rich. However, instead of getting rich they find themselves deeper in poverty. Thus, giving them and their families fewer resources to spend on education. Also, I agree with the other comments about how education probably will not see these funds, that the state says they will receive.

I think the NC Lotto is a great idea, as long as the money goes where it is supposed to. Too many people take advantage of the lottery with taking taxes out. Depending on what taxes are taken out, how much money is actually given to education in our state? Budgets are already being cut from arts in schools. We need a way to compensate and we need to make sure the money is being put to good use within our schools.

The people of north carolina have been hoodwinked in the "Education" lottery. The lottery is supposed to give 291 million bucks to education but at the same time the govenor has taken $291 million out of the budget from education and put it somewhere else. At the same time at least nortch carolina is not losing money to Tennesse, SC, and virginia who all have a lottery.
