I was talking to Larry (an African American Male student in our Diversity class) about his opinion on how to change the situation in these urban schools. Larry felt that it would not matter how much money we put into these schools unless there was an ethnic mixture of students and staff. He gave the example of how he grew up in the projects and would still be there today had he not met some people that showed him there were other ways to live. He said without ever seeing a better life, some people stay in their situation from lack of knowledge of what to change or the hope or desire to change. They are comfortable in the status quo...when students of all ethnicity are together, they can all choose to excel and therefore make changes.
Then I read what Elaine wrote about our local high school and how they still stay in clicks or groups and I don't know what the answers are....
