You know as I read Nickel and Dimed I saw a glimpse of reality. We, none of us, have ever seen it as bad as Barbara described but we aren't millionaires either. As embarrassing as it is I have to admit that I struggle. All of my money goes to pay bills! I am frantically searching for a job this summer, even though I get 12 month checks, just so I can afford to buy extras this summer such as clothes and go on a trip. That is aweful that teachers have to struggle the way we do.

We talk about how that teachers have no respect anymore in the classroom that is has to be earned. Well obviously that is the case because if we were respected we would be making as much as doctors, lawyers and other professionals (which we are suppose to be considered professionals, but I don't see the pay of a professional).

You know the goal for many of us is to create an account and save money for a rainy day and for our children's education. Often when you are a beginning teacher or a newlywed, it takes years to save up money to have a decent savings account. Often after the mortgage is paid, lights, phone, cell, tuition  expenses and books, baby doctor bills, and college loans; there is little left to spend on yourself. You can find yourself living paycheck to paycheck for a while.

As I read Nickled and Dimed, I thought about how sad it is that Barbara tried to work two jobs to make ends meet and how tired she was at the end of the day. We often work one job and are exhausted but are able to make ends meet.

This book is engrossing and makes me appreciative of what I do have.
