I am sure by now you have all heard about what happened at the Platte Canyon High School in Baily, Colorado yesterday. (Which is very near Columbine) If you have not here is the link to the story:

It broke my heart that this happened once again.
I would like to hear everyones thoughts about how they would handle such a horrific situation if we we're the teacers in this high school?

and what can we as the teachers of the future do to prevent such things from happening?[/url]

School shootings are a really hard thing, and I believe that it would be very difficult to deal with as a teacher. I am not going to lie right now I feel like I am unprepared as a future teacher to deal with that situation.

I know that the Columbine shooting was different from this one because the actual gunmans were students. This shooting was a 54 year old man. I feel like I am prepared to understand my students on an individual basis and be able to tell when they are having problems with school work and life in general. Talking to my students and giving them advice about "problems" is going to hopefully create a better environment for these students. Having a enviornment where you feel that a person cares about you could cause a big difference in children's life. This is why I believe that a teachers responsibility is not only to teacher the children but to actually care and understand what that child is going through in life.

Maybe the Columbine shooting could have been prevented if the students would of had a different environment. An environment where people cared, and the students didn't get teased on all the time.

If the shooting does accure though I have no advice on how to handle this. Right now I believe I would be going through counciling as a teacher.
