I was watching one of the several news channels last night and the reporter was talking about all the trouble the model industry has been having with models and having eating disorders and dieing because of complications. But they had this woman who was a former model that had written a book about the issue of model and eating disorders. The reporter asked her whose responsibility was it that she died, her agents knew she had a problem, her parents knew so who was to blame. SO i thought before I went to bed....who to blame...is anyone really to blame....why are models worried so much about being skinny ( she was 5'8" and 88 pounds)....Then I was like its all of our fault....the media, us who watch and want to be like the mini girls, the parents for letting her model since she was 13, the agency because they didn't do anything, and herself because she didn't try to break the mold. When student's see these programs on the news what are they to think? Everyone is skinny on TV, I should be skinny? This model died so maybe it's bad? This is a problem what are some of the ways to raise awareness?

I seen the news story about this model dying. It's terribly sad. I think anorexia is definately a bigger problem than anyone wants to admit in the modeling world. It's almost something they all want to keep hush hush. So sad. I guess one way to promote knowledge on this is to promote beauty of all kinds in your classroom setting.

I agree, that is so sad--but not shocking at all. I agree with Emily that we should do everything we can to promote a healthy lifestyle to our students. I think we could definitely play a part in changing the concept of "beauty" that has overtaken our society to a positive one.
