Post subject:  Educating our students about HIV/AIDS

Quote:
In 2005, more than 11,000 people around the world were newly diagnosed with HIV EACH DAY, and of those new cases, approximately 1,500 were children under the age of 15, according to the UNAIDS/WHO report.

"...APPROXIMATELY 1,500 WERE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 15." As future educators it is our job to inform and educate our students about such diseases. Yes, in health ed this is moreso talked about, but shouldnt we as general teachers also educate our students about protecting themselves from HIV/AIDS??? Yes, most young children are born infectedj because of the transmission through the mother, however, young teens are having un-protected sex infecting themselves. Just last week I attended a program sponsored through CSIL by the office of Multicultural Student Development. The title of the program was "Does this look like a face with AIDS?" The guest speaker was a 30 year old homosexual African American man who had willingly infected himself with AIDS through sexual contact with his partner. The program was quite intersting. Interesting in the sense that he not only self infected himself, but interesting the aspect that he mentioned the number one reason people contract the virus is because they are uneducated about the numerous ways of contraction. Very interesting, I thought.

So, what can we as teachers do to inform and educate our students on this rising epidemic???
