I don't know how this time is any different than the last few times I tried to log in- except for that it worked. :)

I have really enjoyed reading Savage this weekend. I found myself describing East St. Louis to some friends at breakfast Sat. AM. They could not believe the conditions they live and go to school in; neither can I. One made the comment that she could not be a teacher under such conditions and with such little hope of success. Unfortunatly East St. Louis is not the only place with such conditions.

8) Hey, Kristi! I'm glad you're in. I think these boards are going to be a lot of fun.

:( I just HAVE to get a computer at home! I won't always have days like this at school when I can surf/post/reply.

Yes, Regina, I would love to have a computer at home with a great internet connection. (Then, I might be spending what little free time I DON"T HAVE on the computer.)

 Kristi, you're right. Unfortunately East St. Louis is not the only place with such conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:( Hey girls!! I finally made it on. I'm just like you. I don't have a computer at home, so I had to wait until Tuesday to log on. It was very frustrating because I had all of these ideas running through my head all weekend and then I couldn't express them. I think this will be fun, too.

OK I AM GOING TO TRY THIS ONE MORE TIME! I have tried to reply to "Lost in E. St. Louis" twice. Both times I have gotten an error message. Rather than type a lengthy response this time I want to see if this works first. I too do not have internet at home so school time is about it.

Hey Kristi,

Welcome! I had a difficult time getting started as well. Savage Inequalities is a great book, not only for it's content but it is well written. This is the kind of book that is hard to put down.

When I thought about E. St. Louis and it's dedicated teacher's, I had to ask myself, could I be that committed to the future lives of children who have very little hope of breaking out of the prison of poverty and disadvantage. I'm still asking myself.

Phyllis,

The E.St. Louis teacher are very dedicated! What concerns me is the some of the other teachers we've been reding about in Chicago and NY. Why are some of them even in teaching? One principal says he's surprised some of them are still breathing. If that is what our children see every day it's no wonder some of them do not have hope.
