When I read the pages in Ishmael about Adolph Hitler and how he used a story to captivate the people, I couldn't help but think about the people in Iraq and maybe what they have been hearing from their leader. As Ishmael states, "they were nevertheless held captive by it simply because the vast majority around them thought it sounded wonderful and were willing to give their lives to make it a reality". After talking in class tonight about "talk and double talk", and how Americans are perceiving things that aren't so, I am thinking even MORE about those folks in Iraq and what they are hearing! I hope that there are people there who truly want their freedom from Hussein, but are most succumbing to talk and double talk?

That is very true Kathy. It also makes you think of those who were and still are following Bin Laden. I am glad that you made that connection because I had not thought about that in regards to Wednesday night's Iraq events and the interpretation from the book.

Kathy, I enjoyed the correlation you made concerning how the world
perceives people and/or events. Bin Laden I'm sure is viewed differently
among his people because of Hearsay. I agree that we should KNOW the
truth before attempting to voice it to others.

Isn't the world a scary place? I was always amazed how Hitler had control of all of those people. Now, we see this all over the world- cults, leaders of countries, gangs... The persons under the influence of these leaders really don't see what they do as harmful. The people flying the planes into the WTC's never felt that killing those people was terrible. They felt they would get their reward. It bothers and frightens me how easily one person can have that much power.

Sure would be nice if such power was used in a positive way!

You're right Kristie!! Just think what the world could/would be like!! In Ishmael there was a reference about some people not thinking too searchingly about the world they're leaving their children to cope with. I worry about the world my children are growing up in and what it will be like when they are my age. If all that power was used in a positive way, I wouldn't worry as much.
