with brimming eyes
her puffy face implores me
to reach beyond the seen
and touch
that infinite sadness that is her fractured little life.

it turns
it turns
the whole earth turns
on this moment of choice.
the words of high councils
the resolutions of nations
the impassioned speeches and resounding rhetoric of powerful men
matter less than the impoverishment of this child's soul.

we build a nation
create a world
on child, one empty neglected life at a time....

and so i, armed with only a whisper and a word
can wield my weapons with a gentle hand
and brush back the tangled hair
from her swollen little face,
and in my soft mother tongue
croon words of comfort.........

this is my day today.. maxine greene..... i do not struggle with test scores and expectations of the dept. of public instruction..... i don't have to have quote berthol brecht ot alice walker to make clear who i am and what
great weight comes with being a teacher....

we are on the brink of war and all of us in the classroom are already battle weary vetrans.

This is so true Airlie. We are battle veterans in our own classrooms. We teachers do have a part to fulfill for our students and for the most part I feel that we are doing all that we can to do just that. I felt somewhat offended by what I read from Maxine Green. There are ways to teach other than just to the test, as she was referring to, but when there is so much emphasis put on it and so much pressure put on the teachers and students involved what more does she expect. By the way, was she a teacher of testing grades by any chance? I am not, so I cannot say that I have been there but I see what they go through and what they have to deal with day after day just so the students can pass. Perhaps I am way off here, but I wanted to share with you that I felt your words. Thank you.
