A former teacher assistant at our school e-mailed this poem to me Thursday and I thought it went along with our discussion at the end of class Wednesday night. It is written through the eyes of a child.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in God.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing, and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of each family.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities even when you didn't feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to say, "Thanks, for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking."

Kim, I needed this poem. This year in my class has certainly been a sad year. One of my students found that she was going to move. She told me this herself during the calendar time. She was crying, I was crying, and a few of her really good friends were crying. Let's just say that that day was spent discussing feelings of sadness and hope that she would go to a great school with caring students and teachers. Then, last week, one of our bus drivers had a heart attack while bringing the students to school. He passed away and some of the children are having a very difficult time with it, as well as, teachers. I loved this poem because it shows all of us that children are aware. We need to show them in all ways the way to be and conduct themselves. This poem really touched my heart.
Thanks!
DANA

Kim, What a wonderful poem! I'm going to take it and share it with the staff at my school. It just goes to show what an influence we have in the lives of children. Michelle

Thanks for sharing this poem with us Kim. It is a very impressive poem. Children have picked up many things when people "thought they weren't looking." Thanks again for sharing something so positive.

Unfortunately, children see the bad mannerisms and actions when we think that they aren't looking also. I bring it up because my son made an ugly comment about a stranger today (He is 12) and I realized that he sounded JUST LIKE HIS FATHER. It is amazing the things that we do that harm our children without meaning to do them.

Sorry to be negative, but it just made me think.

Note to self: Watch every move I make, every word I say...

I do agree Amanda. Children can also pick up on the bad habits that adults can display. So we should always watch what we do and say so that they can pick up on the good that a lot of us as adults can and do display.

You can tell a lot about a child's parents by the child. That is not to say all good parents have good children, but children are raised not just born. However Amanda that doesn't mean your husband is a bad guy. We all know the routine, when you meet a child's parents for the first conference and afterwards the "aha, that's why they are the way they are." I only wish parents knew the tremendous impact that they have on their children. For children, mom and dad are their heroes and role models. We all have students whose parents are less than honorable, but I wonder what goes on in the minds of the children whose parents are in jail. I have three currently who have parents in jail and they talk openly about it and they love them. But I wonder if they realize that most people are in jail because they made poor choices that they could have avoided.

Kim, I am late geting to the boards this week, but I really enjoyed and needed that poem as well. Thank you for that! Your hope as an educator and as a parent is that children are watching the actions that you do that ARE the good ones and you hope they aren't as quick to pick up on the bad ones. (Unfortunately, they see those just as well...)
