In the book, Savage, I found it very sad that the distribution of resources (money, supplies, books, etc...) was not done in a fair way. Instead of giving to the greatest child in need, resources were given to the highest bidder. One child said that they have to choose- more crayons, a real teacher, or a bunsen burner for science class. It certainly makes me appreciate the school system I work in. I complain about not having enough books, paper, etc... These children have nothing. [/img]

I too realize, after reading, that the fact that we do not have enough books for all children in third grade is a small problem. I can't imagine some of the conditions we have been reading about.
There is a new child in the 3rd grade from NYC. I asked him what school he went to in the Bronx. I was curious to see if it was one we have been reading about. His specific school was not mentioned in the book but I'm sure his experience was similar. He does not speak English very well but his facial expressions answered my question about his old school compared to Oakwood.
