Can we say that maybe Mr. Chauncey was a bit pompous? For his original idea to be to "categorize, sort, and route the entire population" really hit a nerve with me! Supposedly the motto, for Groton was "to serve is to reign", but as Leman put it, the ones doing the "service" weren't necessarily only looking out for other people.

i'm finding the big test quite interesting. i guess it's the history major in me. the mindset of the times, the men involved, and the events that shaped the formation of testing are certainly evident in the testing institute. the big test gives me a good basis for some unanswered questions about the emphasis we place on testing and the type of testing we do. Even our EOG's have only recently been written with "consideration towards all races" by putting in a recipe for tortillas and a few slang/regional dialectial words. (that was mean, but...) OK well i must read on and see how the lives of these men play out. stay warm!!

I,too, am finding the big test interesting. I have been spending so much time reading this book that I had a nightmare about testing last night. I dreamed I was at a test training session with other teachers from my school, learning how to administer the SAT to first graders on up!!!!!!!! That is a scary thought, especially in a society that places so much emphasis on testing!
