As I was reading the book, at certain parts I would audibly gasp (pg. 132
about the orphan boy sticking his himself with the pencil after his art work was torn up by his teacher), my teenage daughter would notice and would constantly ask what I was reading. I read several passages and we would discuss the meaning. Inevitably my other children and husband would join in the discussion. Needless to say, they, like us found it hard to believe that some of the situations exist in this day. They know that there are events and situations that are unpleasant that take place in all cities and towns. In the book, these are certainly brought to the forefront, and it is uncomfortable to accept. Certainly, one point of the book is to empower us with the knowledge that there are neighborhoods and school systems that are in desperate need of help. Perhaps the more people who know can help change even in some small way the circumstances of those cities and schools.
