When I was reading about how southerners scored lower on the test, it reminded me of my first year teaching. We use to give the CAT (California Achievement Test) to all grade levels. One of the questions on the Kindergarten test asked them to mark the picture of a beach. Every child chose the picture of a Chinese women wearing a big hat standing in water to her knees. The correct answer was a cliff with water. They may have cliffs on the west coast, but the east coast has flat beaches. I'm sure the Kindergarters are the west coast scored better! But they aren't smarter!

It seems quite ironic that the southerners scored the lowest on
achievement test when I feel that our state trains wonderful
teachers to prepare students for any field of study they wish
to study.

I was very angry when I read that southerners always scored lowest. This book showed the inequalities in many ways: race, religion, sex, region, etc... It really had me going.

I would have to agree with you about the women being left out of the process but I think I was more upset at the fact that they kept referring to educators or those who were going to be educators as the lowest scorers of the early tests. What does that mean for our, or their, professors? Nowadays everyone says that what the students produce is a direct reflection of how well the teacher teaches or so it seems.
