Congratulations on beating Doofus to the board.
About Savage... I had a hard time reading it also because I was so so angry. I couldn't go past the East St. Louis part for a while because I HAD to know what had been done about those schools. I have researched it on the web and found some interesting things. In 97 there was a five week teacher strike about the conditions. The superintendent and all school board members stepped down--forced out. In 99 there was a trial in which the state was sued on the students behalf. They have had a good superintendent for a while but he retired last year. Ernst &Young and Sunocom have given East St. Louis a grant of 2 million dollars to wire every classroom. Their scores have come up since the book was written in 91 but who really cares if they have to stay in buildings such as are described in Kozol's book? I want to know how things are REALLY now.
Nothing has answered that question for me. I will continue to look.
It is emotional. I didn't help you with how to deal with it. Sorry.
