When Dewey discussed his observance of a busy kitchen where children
were involved in preparing food, he noticed the social aspect of competiton. He noticed that the measurement of success was based clearly on competition. There are many teachers that are guilty of this
teaching style. The goal of any lesson should be that all children learn. Cooperative learning is a wonderful teaching strategy. but the primary goal should be that ALL Children are actively engaged in learning.

I agree that competition is a big problem in our schools. We have contests to see which classroom can bring in the most box-tops for educ., who can sell the most cookie dough, who can collect the most food for Christian Ministries, etc... I hate this!! Kids should be doing this to help the school or to help those in need. This should be the focus. We are all winners because we helped each other. Cooperative learning is a great tool to use in the classroom. We need to pay close attention to our groups to make sure everyone is learning and taking an active role.

I agree that we need to teach children how to work together cooperatively. Getting along with others and listening to their ideas is important for success in school as well as success in a job. Children who work well with each other learn how to listen to others and how to accept ideas that are different. I think that schools which are failing to incorporate cooperative learning are providing a disservice to the children as well as society. Michelle
