I have been fascinated by the term "meritocracy," coined my Michael Young in his book The Rise of the Meritocracy. I keep trying to pronounce this word correctly. As I understand this word, I believe it comes from a combination of the words "aristocracy" and "merit." Aristocracy is a term that means a person who is born into a family of wealth and grows up to be an adult with wealth and influence in society. An aristocrat is a person that lives a life of wealth and influence from birth until death. The score a person earns on a test determines their "merit" or worth in society. A high score allows a person to attend college and "better themselves" for a high paying job and a respected position in society. The term "meritocracy" is a combination of the two terms, "aristocracy" and "merit."

I would like to find out what you think the word "meritocracy" means.
