I was listening to NPR this afternoon, and I heard a story that really echoed the themes of our class. the author of the book The Blind Side: Evolution of the Game was being interviewed. This book is about Michael Orr, a six foot seven, three hundred and fifty pound black male who didn't begin his career as an athelete until well into his high school years. The broadcast mentioned that if Michael had not have been adopted into a white family and gone to some exclusive Memphis schools that his talent would have gone unnoticed. The broadcast mentioned a study that was done of Memphis schools. 1 in 6 atheletes who are talented enough to qualify for a full academic scholarship to college is unable to do so because of academic requirements. The author of this book, who's name I didn't catch but I'm sure it can be GOOGLED, commented that these atheletes don't qualify not because they're stupid, but because they have been failed by public schools and American society. Also, apparently a gang wanted to recruit this fellow as a body guard when he dropped out of school, which he tried to do before being adopted by a wealthy white family. This story reminded me so much of Cedric and the twin who was banking on the athletic scholarship.

This sounds like a really good book. I loved the story about Cedric. I enjoy stories like that. Bobbi, I know you work in the Alternate school and I think that is really great. I know you are having a difficult time-- but just think what a difference you can make in a child's life. It is so worth it. Keep up the good work!
