I met a man about a week ago who was bragging about trying to clean his act up and stop smoking Marijuana. He was in detox because of an upcoming drug test. I guess he passed and his clean streak is over. I saw him this weekend at Oktober Fest and he was high. That just reminded me of Nickel and Dimed where she states that no research indicates that drug testing before a job really helps anything. I have known lots of people over the years that clean themselves up just long enough to take a drug test and then they are back to the same bad habits. I am still blow away by the more serious drugs not staying in your system long enough to really be detected by drug tests. What a waste.

I have never taken drugs, so it is hard for me to even fathom having to try to "detox" myself in order to pass a drug test for employment. I was shocked that Barbara Ehrenreich admitted to trying to "detox" herself in order to pass a drug test. When I first read this in her book, I thought she was kidding, and I went back and reread! At least she was honest about it, and we were able to read about her experience. I totally agree, Kelly, what a waste of time, and life it is to be addicted (or even a user, for that matter) to drugs.

It is ironic that most people only are tested for drug use one time before employment. Most people know how to play the game and cleanse their system before testing occurs. This in no way really give clear information about the prospective employee's habits. If we feel that drug use is inappropriate and may potentially harm people then would random drug testing be a possible intervention for companies to consider.

If an employer is really serious about employees being on drugs, then random drug testing should be enforced. This one time drug test before being hired is useless. I agree with Mitzi and Elizabeth that most drug users know how to pass this type of test.

When my husband worked for Charlotte-Meck he had to take a drug test. They only get tested once so he knew some of the people he worked with that had to stay at their schools because they didn't want to get tested or have people check their records somewhere else. I think it is kind of sad that the school system I work for doesn't even have back ground checks. I have worked in another state that requires a back ground check every year to protect the children. It's an inconvience to us, but protects the children. The same as the drug tests. They do random tests for bus drivers.

Lindsey,
It's interesting to know that you had background checks yearly where you previously worked. I remember being drug tested one time when I was hired by my school system and they ran 1 background check also. I think background checks would be a great way to protect our children. My church has a safe sanctuary policy in place and before anyone can work with children he/she has to have a background check. Our background record checks have to take place every 5 years. It's surprising to me that my church checks every 5 years but the school system does not!!!

I, too, am shocked that some school system don't require a background check at all. I am more shocked that teachers do not want to change jobs because of what they are doing (drugs, etc.) that might be detected. What wonderful role models they must be!!

I never had any idea that you could detox your body from the drugs ingested. A little bizarre that the more lethal the drug, the less traceable it is. That's scary.
