| Post subject: | Poisonwood Bible versus Ishmael |
Did anyone make a connection between Ishmael's perspective of the world and the Mamba snake's (Ruth May's??) perspective at the end of the Poisonwood Bible's. I thought both discussed the " destruction of earth and other cultures by the "civilized" or "takers" culture. I am interested if anyone else made that connection.?. |

I definately agree with you on that point! I think the whole book was laden with the idea of takers versus leavers. The "primitives" in the Congo are "leavers." I would assume that the Belgians and the Americans were the "takers." And they took and took and took until Africa almost had nothing left to give. I also thought it was very interesting that the point of population growth, more crops, starvation (cycle) was made in this novel. The most prominent point was when leah brought her family to live in Georgia for a while. I wonder if Ishmael had any influence on Kingslover and her penning of this novel? |
