We've come a long way...

We have. But I have to say that everytime I put on my business attire I always feel like I am stepping into an androgynous role. The bottom-down shirts, the slacks, and even business jackets that still often have SHOULDER PADS. Would you be taken seriously in a sundress? Could you be the CEO of a huge business?

I would hope that if I wanted to wear a dress to work that I would still be taken seriously. I love to dress feminine... and I would hope that wouldn't be held against me in the workplace. However, I think it depends on where you work as to whether or not your attire would matter. As long as your dress is appropriate for work, not showing too much, I think it would be appropriate for most any business. Dresses are just that... dressy and professional. Again, there are guidelines as to what looks professional. Flowery sundresses with sandals may not be as appropriate as a knee length black dress with a cardigan over it... who knows- I think it just depends on the job.

for schools, isn't there a pretty specific dress code for the ladies? My mom was talking about having to wear long socks or stockings with pants. Definitely NO jeans for women.

Um...that's what she has said. I have never really seen women in public schools wear jeans...but I've seen men do it all the time. (mostly on fridays) Eh, I'm not quite sure, depends where you are from/where you teach? Were there any harsh dress codes for the teachers where you went to school?

In the school system I went to women and men were both allowed to wear jeans on Fridays. Teachers were even allowed to wear school spirit team apparal on certain days. There was a strict dress code for teachers, meaning they had to dress professional but it was for women and men.

I remember the dress code for both males and females being at least semi-professional. The problem I had was when female teachers were allowed to wear shirts or dresses that showed their shoulder but students were not. I found it to be pretty hypocritical. I remember one of my male teachers who wore a tie to school every day. He said that if we want to be viewed as professionals, we should act and dress like professionals. As far as my opinion... as long as the code is fair and universal, I'm down.
