I'm looking carefully at the life of Clarence Thomas and hoping to compare his plight with those of other oppressed people.

1. Three years after a "blistering confirmation battle" he lives as a recluse (Suskind, 116).
2. The hearings left him dazed and stumbling.
3. His uniform response is to withdraw, shun media and most invitations.
He acts on the passion to encourage others who walk the path by inviting them for a visit.
4. He keeps memorabilia about his roots in his daily "official" life.
He deliberately posts positive messages in the office relating to sharing the credit, only way to aoid citicism is to do doing nothing; the unreasonable are bigots.
5. His office treasures the santicity of the human heart--proof: "No word spoken here is ever repeated outside these walls."
5. He seeks out positive and concrete ways to help his fellow man walk the path he too has walked.
6. He finds a common ground with others by connecting with them on similar ordeals and puts them at ease.
7. Cherishes literary heroes, family, and religion.
8. Desires most to offer hope (119).
9. Values persistence in small and big things.
10. Started off in life as an illegitimate child.
11. Prize advice: Be yourself--"just a person" (121).
12. Don't separate yourself as being a certain group.
13. More advise: Keep studying like your life depends on it.
and so much more...

Too bad, these few pages aren't found in any texts for our adolescents. Perhaps this, too, is more college material that is a help to us as administrators who must work with so many other people to do a great thing. Perhaps we are to be ourselves.
