We all know about ISS, OSS, and Alternative Schools. When I mentioned the BATS program in another series, some of you wanted more information. I have some brochures which I will pass out on Wednesday, but here is a little more info.

BATS - Burke Alternative To Suspension
The director is Ed Hardin ( ehardin@burke.k12.nc.us ) if anyone wants the full description and purpose, I know he will be more than happy to help you.
When students are suspended (OSS) in grades 6 through 12, they can attend BATS. They go to work for one of 21 community organizations and businesses to perform community service for each day they are suspended. There is a time set apart for them to do their school assignments. Counseling services are available and the goal is to prevent future suspensions.
Each year, the number of repeat offenders reduces.
Funding source - Safe Schools Funds

I would love to hear information on other alternative discipline programs that are effective in your school district.

I think that's a great alternative to OSS. Do you know the process of how they involved the local businesses? Do the county provide transportation?
