This is something that bothers me. When you watch t.v. or read articles about how celebrities and professional athletes make so much money, but Teachers one of the most important people in the world make hardly nothing. I don't understand why we do that as a society. We pay someone that can shoot a basketball or say a couple lines in a movie ten times the amount we pay our teachers that shape our children in the world today. I just don't get it. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this?

I agree with you on this 100% percent, as the amount of money that some people make is simply disgusting. But I think the reality of the fact is that even though these people make 6 figures, they make other people a LOT of money, much much more than they make. A basketball player gets a million dollar endorsement deal simply because the company that offers it stands to make much more money from the deal. Last time I checked, I didn’t find anyone willing to endorse me just because I can teach you how to change a hard drive in a computer...

It’s a sad fact, but to me, it is all about the money. Teachers really don’t make anyone else money, and therefore society does not see any reason to pay us any more than they absolutely have to.

I think about this exact thing quite often. It bothers me very much that other professions make so much more than teachers. If it weren't for teachers, there would be no doctors, lawyers, or athletes. I find the amount of money that athletes and celebrities make, for "work" that is often not hard whatsoever, sickening.

I agree with with all the comments made for this topic and would like to see teachers make a higher salary than athletes in professional sports do. A recent deal by the New York Yankees could cost them up to 305 million dollars over the next 10 years. To put that into prospective I found some information to show what could be done with that much money.

Teacher's salaries that could be paid in N.C. --> 7,036 (average salary $43,000)

New Schools Built in N.C.--> Elementary:23
or
Middle School:19
or
High School: 7
New School buses-->7,625

Teacher aide salaries that could be paid --> 16,576 (national average of $18,000)

That is crazy! It has always bothered me that the people who inspire kids to grow up and become so rich, make so little. It makes me sad, but al we can do is fight for more money once we are working.

I agree with what everyone has been saying so far, but the main problem with fighting for better wages, especially on more local levels is that it is often seen as a selfish pursuit by parents or non-educators. I suppose the issue must come to a head at some point. I think before teachers will ever receive higher salaries, more focus and funding needs to go into bettering education. When the nation's policies truly support a self-sustaining educational system and have education as an appropriately funded program, teachers will then get substantial salaries.

I just wish there was some way that we could cap the salaries of pro athletes and actors. I mean whatever they make over 150,000 should be donated back into the community. Maybe, somehow legalize the royalties that come from advertisement goes back into the community. There has got to be something that can benefit everyone.

I'm not sure if its true, but I heard that teachers in Alaska get 80,000...
I don't know what else to say, other then that every teacher goes into the field knowing what they will be getting paid. The way I deal with it, is that I try to remember why I ever wanted to become a teacher. What inspires me and what drives my want to help children grow.

I completely agree that it does not make sense that we pay these people so much money. Teachers are important to the future, and so many claim it to be a noble profession, but we are not paid nearly enough to survive. It doesn't make sense, but I guess we just have to accept it as the way our society it. :(
