After reading the Rosa Parks and Helen Keller articles off the syllabus, I was wondering if anyone had any prior knowledge of some of these generalizations and their inaccuracies. I know that someone did tell me that Hellen Keller was a socialist in high school, but not to the extend that this article covered, but I had never really thought about what some of the children's literature wrote about Rosa Parks or other American Heroes. I guess my question is did anyone learn about some of these historical inaccuracies in high school, or was college the first time you had experienced these topics in depth?

I always portrayed Rosa Parks as a old lady that already involved in a movement group that was planning ways to make statements. Well i must say until this semester in my Children's world lit class i read the story of Rosa Parks. She was not old and she actually was a hard working women that was rewarded that day and sent home early for her brother birthday. Now when she was on the bus she sat in the section that was for both black and whites so she technically did not have to move! also she was not planning on causing trouble but she simple was tired of being mistreated all the time and especially on the bus. I never knew the real story and I now i see more of the power of her actions.
This just proves that we as teachers need to tell the whole story and not parts so the students can see the whole truth of any situation.

I never really knew much about Helen Keller, but Rosa Parks was more talked about in my high school. My vision of her was an elder lady that was using the bus system to get from the grocery store and back and when she got on the bus the only seats left open were on the very front. I actually remember seeing some type of re-enactment video in school that portrayed her as an elderly lady with gray hair and glasses.

I never learned much about Helen Keller and Rosa Parks. The only things I learned about Helen Keller is that she had an amazing experience by a water pump one day, and she grew up to give speeches and help people. Like Robert, my only idea about Rosa Parks, was the vision of an elderly lady who had no choice but to ride in the front of a bus. I think it is very enlightening to know that the education system is so selective in what information they allow to be taught about certain figures in history.
