In the McCarthy article I can see and agree with some of the reasoning behind the argument that socialization and norms control the type and disposition of education, however, I also dislike, overgenaralizations and minimizing personal responsibility. Except for the children, those members of the Jones incident chose to accept his leadership, and then failed to requestion his motives or validity. The same concept must be seen in education. Yes, society does set the cirriculum, but the students and teachers are the ones who interpet that cirriculum.
Mankind is a social animal, and therefore, man must institutionalize every aspect of it's existance. We have placed faith in a box, set formal expectations of the roles of males and/or females, (not to mention the in betweens), and at the same time called for diversity. let's face it, we ARE confused.
The question is not one of obedience and disobedience, but the ability to think critically, act morally, and respond responsibly.
We must also look at how these events occured. will someone ask in fifty years how we could let oneone like president Bush lead us into a prolonged war?
