I can't think of any examples off the top of my head (mostly because I still haven't finished the book) but I really liked how Cuadros was able to be the boy's teacher (in soccer), friend, advocate, and still demand respect from them. It is sad when you see one student fail, but he knew how important being a part of the team was to the students and that is why it worked. It's just sad that through all the boys accomplished, they still went back to basically no opportunities after high school.
