I wanted to get you alls opinion on violence in the schools of today. I know that when I was in high school that violence wasn't that big of an issue, however today I hear that it is much worse? Do you all think that there is more that we can't do to prevent violence in the schools?

I think it depends on where you went to school. As a CMS grad I was lucky b/c the schools I went to didn't have major violence issues however some had gang fights everyday. I think that more police in the schools and strict staff can prevent some of the fights, my principle in high school would take down students if he had to not just tell them to stop thus people didn't mess with him. I also think that the punishment for fighting should be ISS or after-school detention not OSS. OSS is just days off school which is fun not punishment and the administrative staff who thinks it is is blind to the world in which they live.

I agree with Anna. OSS is want many students want. It gets them out of school, which is exactly where they want to be. I remember students in the high school that I came from that would set up "fake" fights so that they could both be out of school for three or four days. What was even worse was the fact that my school had a bad habit of making OSS their first course of punishment, and because of that they had students that were completely suspended from school by Halloween.

I think the best thing for that would to make sure that you have cooperation from the teachers and a school resource officer, i know that we never had any major violence at school, that i can remember, there were threats here and there but nothing ever really happened.

School violence is definitely on the rise and I feel there is no really good way to address it. Many of you feel that OSS is a bad thing and yes it is if it is used as a first resort. However I wonder why many of you feel that we should not use it at all. Putting kids in is ISS does nothing except cause an even bigger distraction. And I am sorry but for fighting you have to have OSS you cant have a kid at the school that is a possible threat to the safety of others. And I know in my school the majority of the kids in ISS were the same every day. They learned nothing from that punishment.
