Post subject:  Fixed vs. Flexible Scheduling

I thought that what Erin shared about the uses of the media center and how we, as educators, can work together to make sure that our students are getting the best education and the most they need from the resources we have was very beneficial to me. With that in mind, I have a question...I know that depending on whether you are elementary or secondary, math or english, or whatever has to do with your opinion, but I was curious to know everyone's opinion on fixed or flexible scheduling?? What do you think?

Personally, as an English, secondary ed. major, obviously flexible is better for me. I would like to be able to take my students to the media center whenever I needed to, and be able to collaborate with the media specialist when it comes to research and writing time. What do you guys think?

I agree with you Anna, as secondary math the flexible schedule would be better for me. I just think it would be really hard for me to plan my schedule around a certain day and time that I would have to go to the media center. If a subject were to come up and I wanted my students to do some research and it wasn’t my time for the media center I would either have to postpone my lesson plan or just forget it all together. I believe that the flexible schedule would not only be better for me, but also for my students because they would get more out of the media center.

I would have to agree with both of you. As secondary history having a flexible schedule would be a great benefit. I want to cover current events with my student no matter if I teach US History, C&E, or World History. So to be able sign up for a space in the media center to research a current event would be a great help.

I would have to agree that flexible scheduling would seem to have more benefits, even for the fine and applied arts teachers. Flexible scheduling would ensure that the media center is available when it is needed. I want to be able to not just cover music literature, but also allow the students to research composers and musical styles they may not know as much about.

I agree that a flexible schedule would be best as well. You never know when you may want to only send a few students to the library at a time, and if you know the media specialist has a flexible schedule odds are that they will be available to help those students you send at different times.

I agree, I feel as though flexible would be most beneficial. Plus with fixed schedules, the arts generally get left out of the loop. It would help me collaborate more with other teachers.

I think that almost everyone agrees that flexible scheduling is the way to go. As an elementary education major, and as a lover a books, I want my class to be able to go to the library whenever they want. When I was in elementary school, if had finished our work that we were doing in class, we could get a library pass and go to the library to read books, get on the computer, etc. I think that flexible scheduling is a very valuable thing to have in place at any school (elementary, middle, or high school). Students should be able to do research whenever they want, get books, or read magazines. I want my students to have the freedom in the library that I had, I think that it makes going to the library all the more enjoyable.

As an elementary education major, I believe that flexible scheduling is the best option. I love books, and I plan to integrate them into many aspects of the curriculum. I want my students (individually or as a class) to feel they can go to the library at anytime to choose a book, do research, or learn something new. While I want my class to be able to visit the library at any time, I feel that it is important to also have a fixed time each week where a class can visit the library. This will keep those elementary teachers who do not take any time to go the library in check. It will ensure that they let their students explore the library and the wonderful world of books.

I definitely agree with Tracy about Secondary Math. Visiting the media center every week wouldn't be practical or a good use of my time or the students. I do think that the media center could be used in a math class to encourage not only math but other subjects too.

A flexible schedule will work better for me because I will be working in either a middle school or high school setting. In FCS, there are many projects that need the internet and computers to be completed. I am very grateful and also excited about how many resources the media center will be able to provide me with. Recently, I observed a school and the media center specialist and the FCS teacher were working together on an after school presentation from a Chinese speaker. The FCS teacher provided Chinese inspired food and the media specialist provided all decorations. It was great to see an interaction and this type of experience.

As with everybody else a flexible schedule would work great with me. When students need help on a project or need to check out a book for reading i would like my students to be able to do so. But then if everyone wants flexible scheduling it cant happen. Kids would be everywhere and teachers would rush to get their students to the media center first so they could use it. SO although flexible is the better way to go, i can see why most schools do have a fixed media center schedule.
