Post subject:  Fixed or Flexible Schedule
As a teacher (depending on the grade you want to teach) would you rather your school library have a fixed or flexible schedule? Why?

Although the flexible schedule does seem very interesting and stimulating to all I would probably still rather have a fixed library schedule. I will be teaching elementary school students so as far as having the fixed schedule I believe that it will allow for a better insurance of a structured environment for the students. Even though the best type of library system would be by having a fixed schedule with the possibilities of having some flexible library times. I do however, like the flexible way has more collaboration and communication, but fixed just seems more stable and gives the kids something that is controlled feeling. Overall, the fixed library structure seems best for me and if I needed extra library help or resources then we could all work together depending on the situation.

Without a doubt I want to work for a school that has a flexible library system. I will be in an elementary school setting. The flexible setting will allow for my students to use the library much more than a fixed schedule would allow them to. I like the idea of being able to send my students to the library at any time and to be able to give them extra library time as a reward on a good week or a break if they're having an off week and need something fun to get them to refocus on their work. I am excited that many systems are changing to a flexible schedule and hope to work in a school system that has either a complete flexible or a combination fixed/flexible schedule. The more my students can use the media center, the better at least in my opinion.

I feel like a flexible schedule would work best for me. As a middle school teacher I plan to have a lot of both individual and group projects, and the flexible schedule would allow students to go to the library when they need to without all the distractions of having a whole class in there with them. I also believe that it would encourage students to go to the library more often and it would feel like less of a "chore," and would instead become a sort of "escape" from the everyday.

Although I'm sure that a flexible schedule is more efficient and would work better for the students, I would probably prefer a fixed schedule. As a teacher, I'm sure that I would greatly appreciate and look forward to my scheduled planning time and a fixed schedule would allow this. I remember being in elementary school and having a fixed schedule, and I remember really enjoying it and gaining a lot from it. I would look forward to the days that we went to the library and the lessons/activities that the librarian would do with us. So, I definitely think that I would enjoy and benefit most from a fixed schedule, with a little bit of flexibility avaibable as well.

Flexible scheduling kind of makes me nervous in regards to my classroom. I know that I will have many students who need that set schedule and will be upset if things go out of order. I think the best option for my classroom would be a fixed schedule with some "flexibility" so that if I had students who wanted to go do some independent work that they would be allowed to do that.

I think fixed scheduling definitely has its benefits for elementary school students. They get a chance to learn about how the library works, they are ensured time to check out new books, and it is really structured. I think it would be great to have the flexible option just in case, but I wouldn't feel comfortable sending my lower elementary students to the library to work independently. I do, however, definitely see the benefits of flexible scheduling for middle school students.

Since I am planning on teaching early elementary I think a fixed schedule would work best because like others have said it is very important to have a set schedule so the students know when we do what. Also with early elementary they are still learning how a library works so having the fixed schedule is very important because it teaches them how to find books they would like and how to check them out but it also insures that they will not miss the due date. I also feel that it is very important for your librarian to know what you are learning about in the classroom so that they can incorporate that into their lesson. It would also be great if along with a fixed schedule there could be a partially flexible schedule for students to go to the library and have some extra library time through out the week, possibly as a privilege.

In terms of elementary school I like Katie's perspective on a flexible schedule because I think overall it provides more freedom and opportunities, albeit at at the cost of more work and planning to get it scheduled in and working properly.

As a high school teacher though, I am not exactly sure how I would use the library period. Its just not something I have really thought about before. How useful will the library be to my history classes and will we go their often? I don't know, but hopefully someone could provide some insight. I know at my high school we didn't use it much at all.
