After the discussion today in class about a boy wearing eyeliner and being made fun of I thought about my internship that I did this semester. I had a boy who had a pretty significant mental disability and he was in the regular PE class. Whenever we would work in partners no one wanted to be his partner because he did not understand everything that we were doing. We struggled with what to do with him and we decided to just try and put him with students that would be more understanding and work with him. I do not think that will always work though. Any thoughts on how you would handle this situation or any situation where you have a student that clearly does not fit in?

In my middle school and high school PE classes we I had at least two classmates who were severely mentally handicapped. One was low functioning downs and the other was cerebral palsy with some other things going on. I remember them being on their own for a lot of the "partner" activities in middle school and I remember toward the end of the year our class was split up more for teams than partners. We would divide ourselves into "competitive" or "noncompetitive" halves. Then our teachers would split us into teams from those groups. That meant that these two boys were mainly with the noncompetitive groups. I found that when our class was split they would play with us more and get to participate. By being in a noncompetitive group, students were more open to accepting them and the coaches started to help us find ways of including them without having to focus just on their disability. By high school we had all had classes with these boys and so it was no longer an issue, there was a group of about 15 of us who they would have take PE with them and then we would switch up who was their buddy for the day. Through the help and guidance of our classroom and PE teachers we found ways to not only make it less awkward but also to make it beneficial and fun for both us and those two boys.
