I hope this doesn't make me look really ignorant but one of the biggest things i learned was that many LGBTs do not wish they were born the opposite sex. Matt was saying he sometimes wishes his preferences or orientation were different but he didn't wish he were born a girl.

I was curious as to how they felt during elementary school and when they started to realize that they were different. I think it is good to know the politically correct terms to use when dealing with homosexuality and to know that not all LGBT's accept the same terms. The thing I think that we discussed that will help us as teachers is to get a feel for the views of the community when addressing these types of situations. Each location may have different views when it comes the these more liberal beliefs and they will also have their preferred terms.

I'm from a community where you don't hear about LGBTs. I can't remember any from middle school, high school or any event I participated in. In that case, everything they said was fairly interesting to me. I felt like I was so out of the loop when it came to questions to ask or just general knowledge, so I felt like I benefited from most everything we discussed.

I was completely shocked to hear that they (the younger generation) preferred the moniker, "queer." That was a term I thought they considered pejoritive instead of "gay." And since I unfortunately always say, "That's gay" in a derogitory way, they taught me to be prudent when choosing certain words.
