I had a student share a segment of her situation with me during my internship. Ever since then, I have been wondering how I would handle the situation if I was the teacher. The situation was as follows: I had stayed after school one day for tutoring (I was helping students who needed extra help with homework.), and I noticed a girl who was there, who was not working on anything. She told me that she stays after school for tutoring because it was better than going home. I asked her why, and she told me that she gets into arguments with her mom. In order to avoid her mom, she stays after school for tutoring. However, tutoring is only available on Wednesdays and Fridays, which means she has to go home the other days of the week, right? What should we, as teachers, do for students in this situation? I think it is sad if a student would rather stay after school, instead of going home to his or her family. I feel that your home should be a safe haven, instead of a place to avoid. |

Maybe in a situation like that, I would give the mom a call and see if I could set up a meeting with me, her and maybe a counselor. I know it's typical for teenagers to fight with their parents, but this seems like a real problem if she doesn't want to go home. Is the mom an alcoholic? Use drugs? If so, then I would tell the principal, who would probably contact social services and have the kid removed from their home. I had a student who was pulled from her home last semester during my internship because her mom was abusive and the child cut herself. They put her with foster parents, and she started to improve. Perhaps this girl needs to be removed until things get smoothed over with mom. |

I agree with Jessey. If the talking with mom and student did not work, and the student was a musician, I hope to have a "practice/study" session after school for those students that cant practice at home to come into the band room after school and work. I would encourage that student to use that opportunity after school, whenever tutoring was not available. |
