After discussing this in class as well, I thought I would ask if most people agree with this statement or if any people disagree. What does it mean that intelligence is a quality?

I think that it makes sense that intelligence is a quality and not a quantity. A quantity, or number, is so simplistic while a quality can encompass so much more. By assigning a number to a person's intelligence, there is no way to compare learning strategies or how a person thinks and processes a problem. Even two people with the same number IQ probably have different learning styles. It goes back to the question, "is there a unitary thing in the head called intelligence."

Well, we don't try to measure a person's niceness. There's no test to see how many good deeds you would perform or anything like that. M&Ms, shoes, light bulbs...stuff like that can be counted. I can point to them. I think it's a safe assumption to say if you can't see and touch something, you can't count it. You can't count love, intelligence etc. That sort of thing is unquantifiable. You can guess, but who's to say you're right?

I agree that intelligence is a quality because just like Leslie said even though someone might have the same IQ doesn't mean they have the same learning styles. I also agree with Natalie that intelligence can not be counted like objects. Intelligence is so much more than just putting a number on something which makes it more than just a quantity.

I agree with the quality over quantity idea. I have always said that some people have book smarts, some people have common sense smarts, and some people have both. I feel like if a person if really smart, they tend to think highly of themselves and sometimes feel like they are better than others. This is NOT always the case though. But, when they feel like that I feel like all they have is the quantity part. People who have common sense are similar to the ones who have the book smarts. They sometimes feel better than others.

I think that people who have common sense but are smart as well, have the quality part. They have the book smarts, but at the same time, they have enough common sense to know that they aren't better than anyone else.

This isn't the case for everyone. Most of the people I know, and probably most of the people in the world have the quality part, but I do know a few people who have the quantity but no quality.

I also agree that intelligence should be quality over quantity. Someone could know everything in the world but if they do not sound intelligent when they talk, it does not matter that they know everything. People can also know a lot of useless information which would classify as quantity.
