I was thinking about Dr. Turner's statement about how she would talk to her class about protesting. I am an elementary ed. major and it would be very difficult to talk to elementary students about a topic like abortion or gay rights. I was just wondering what anyone else thought about this and how they would handle the situation if say a first grader saw posters about abortion and starting asking questions.

I honestly don't really know what I would do about this. I might possibly talk to the parents and tell them what was going on in case their students came home asking questions.

So what do yall think?

I feel the same about this topic for elementary education majors. I do not know how I would begin to talk about this topics but I feel that although they may come up it would be more likely for them to come up in the highschool setting. This is a good question and I am not sure how to answer it.

This is a hard topic. If I were an elementary school teacher, I think I wouldn't go into detail about it, but say that the people outside were standing up for what they believe it. If the kids questioned what the pictures were, I don't think I would tell them...elementary age kids, esp. the younger ones aren't ready to know that, in my opinion. I would inform the parents of what had happened, and hopefully there wouldn't be abortion protests outside an elementary school anyway.

This would be a difficult situation to handle. If people were protesting I think I would just explain that those people are voicing their opinions about something. I would not go into detail but I would inform the parents of the situation so that they could handle it however they wanted to at home. Hopefully, there won't be any protests outside of an elementary school, but you never know.
