After watching a couple of minutes of that Matthew Shepard documentary, I was wondering what everyone's opinions were of the comment one of the Laramie residents made. She said that in their town it was "Live, and let live". What does everyone think about that comment, and do you think that it is a viable slogan to base all your social interactions throughout life?

I feel like everyone in that town is trying to hide the story of Matthew Sheppard. The lady that said the "Live and let live" comment was acting like it was no big deal, and that things like that were rare and didn't really happen.

Also, when the man came out of the house, he was really friendly until the reporter wanted to talk to his wife about the killing. After he found that out the lady wanted to talk about the killing, he didn't want anything to do with the reporter and told her to leave that she wasn't welcome there.

I feel like the town is trying to simply forget what happened and just ignore the reasons why it happened.

Obviously her town wasn't very live and let live, because Matthew died. She seemed like an ostrich with her head stuck in a hole, but that's just my personal opinion. On an offnote, 'let live' almost sounds like you're permitting someone to live, as if you should have a say in it whatsoever. One of the panel members today mentioned how 'tolerate' has a negative connotation to it, and I can see that applying to that saying as well.

I think the expression would have been more suited to be"live and let die" as most of the residents simply wanted to ignore the issue. If they were "live and let live" as the lady said they would let the issue "live" and keep it more present in the minds of the town. To me she was using this maxim as an excuse to change the subject, not to say what the town really stood for.
