Although I had never heard of Mai Lai, I could relate to it. I am Hmong. Which is an Asian tribe in Southeast Asia. During the Vietnam War the Hmongs were asked by the American CIA to help fight alongside of the Americans soldiers. The agreement btw the CIA and the American were that if we assisted the Americans during the war and won then afterwards the Americans would establish a land for us; if we lost then the Americans would provide a safe place for us.

On April 30, 1975, American troops left Saigon and not one single Hmong person went with them. There were refugee camps and there some Hmong would flee to and Lutherans would sponsor small groups at a time to several different parts of the world. Many Hmong people were left behind and those who are still now stuck in the Laotian mountains are still being prosecuted.

I grew up hearing about war. I saw the scars left by war and heard about all the pain and all the deaths. My mom lost her mom and six siblings. My grandpa's brother was caught and imprisoned. We didn't find out he was still alive until 1997.

While we were watching Mai Lai, tears ran down my face b/c I saw my aunts and uncles faces in those people who were massacred.
