A week or so ago we were discussing advertisements and the way body image and sex are exploited in advertisement. There are numerous pro-ana websites that are pro-anorexia. How will you address issues such as these websites with students in your classroom?

When it comes to body image, each of us has a different stature. Just because you are really skinny or have a bigger body type does not mean that you have an eating disorder or are unhealthy. This is not to say that most models are healthy because the majority of them starve themselves and end up with some type of eating disorder. This is not how the perfect body type should be depicted. I do believe that we as teachers should make sure that each of our students has proper nutrition when they are at school and at home. All teachers should teach their students that anorexia is harmful to your health and body (mentally and physically).

I definitely plan on including a lesson on body image. I think it is very important for students especially girls, understand that the images they are presented with in the media are not accurate and they should be happy with how their bodies are. It is a very important subject to cover!

From personal experience I can say that eating disorders are a huge issue that are difficult to spot unless you know what you are looking for. I agree with Brad when he says that just because someone is skinny doesnt mean that they have a eating disorder. There is also two definitions of skinny, one is healthy skinny where it doesn't affect your health and theres another type of skinny where it affects your health and makes you very moody. I think they should have a lot more programs out there that promote girls being healthy. That means not too thin or not too much over weight because that also affects your health as well.
