I thought the speakers that came to class last week were very brave to come and share their experiences. It was very interesting to hear their stories. I now better understand how difficult it can be to grow up and be different in some way. This experience has helped me to be more open to different situations and I think it will help me in the future as a teacher. |

I'm glad that the speakers that day came and shared their personal experiences with us. I would be terrified if I had to talk about those things in front of a class. But they seemed pretty comfortable talking with us. This day in particular was extremely beneficial because as a teacher, I can help students who are going through an extremely difficult time and let them know that they can always come and talk to me. |

It really was beneficial to me for the students to come and speak with us. I realized that even though I thought I understood some of what these students go through in school, I really had no clue how difficult it really can be for them. It really opened my eyes and helped me realize that I need to be willing to reach out to ALL of my students, regardless of how they live their lives. |

I am also glad that the speakers came and shared their experiences with us. Hopefully, by hearing these life stories, the future educators in our class will take these learning experiences into consideration when they have (a) GLBTQ student(s) in their classrooms. I halfway wish I could have shared a story from my time in middle school. It happened during my 7th grade year, and I had my hair cut short. I was going into the restroom one day and my math teacher actually stopped me and told me that I was going into the wrong restroom. I was so embarassed...and the only thing I could do to defend my self was to argue with her that I WAS a girl! That is something that no middle schooler should have to experience, and especially not in front of his/her friends. |
