In one of my music education classes the other day we were talking about ho band directors have a very hard time distinguishing with their students between being friendly and being friends. I imagine that this is a problem for most teachers, especially in the high school age groups. I feel that we should get to know our students, but there is very fine line, that should never be crossed. I was wondering on how other people felt/perceived this line?

I remember this conversation in class...I think I am having the most trouble understanding this because of how close I was to my band directors in the past. They were always the teacher that I went to when I wanted to talk about something or when I had a problem. In our Foundations class we keep talking about how it is important to be that teacher that your students feel comfortable talking to and approaching if they need something, yet, in my Band Techniques class we were forewarned to walk the thin line between "friends" and "friendly" with the greatest of caution. I am horrified every time I hear on the news about a teacher that has gotten in trouble for having too close of relations with his/her students. I hope that common sense and good morals will be enough to help me be there for my students without ending up being their best friend.
