I am an Art Ed Major, and I am wondering how everyone felt about their experience in art class in school. I am hoping that as a teacher I can help children love art and appreciate it....not hate it! So I want to know how your art classes were taught. Did your teacher allow a freedom of expression and creativity or did they control the activities and were product oriented? Did you like it? Did it make you hate art? or did it help you build a love for art?

I always enjoyed art and felt a connection with it. My dad is a graphic designer so he always approved of anything dealing with art and expanding my imagination. In elementary school my art teacher was the most pleasant person to be around. She would often times yell at us (even in first grade) if we forgot to use chicken pox size glue dots or let the paint brush stay in the water too long. She pretty much scared me to death and made me dislike going to her class. Luckily, she didn't lead me to hating art, but I never felt like I could talk to her as a human being because I was afraid what her reaction might have been. I've been back to the elementary school I used to go to and talked to the art teacher now. He has a different approach to art and allows freedom of expression and creativity. I hope to promote creativity in my own classroom.

My art experience in school was great until high school. Mary I am sure you have heard me talk about my experience in high school. My art teacher in high school was terrible. I am going to be an art teacher and I have always said that I am never going to be like her. That was one of the reasons why I wanted to be an art teacher. She inspired me but for all the wrong reasons!
