Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to listen to Ron Henries speak on Inclusion classrooms. I had taken Mr. Henries class and had heard most of what he spoke of. However, this did not discourage my excited of being able to discuss classroom issues with someone who is much more experienced than myself.
Mr. Henries spoke about the progression of Special education through the past years. It was interesting to see the "new" concepts of the different years and the progression toward bettering the program. Having had the opportunity to work in an inclusion classroom I have seen many of its benefits. Actually, in my experience I have seen an extremely positive outcome. By allowing special needs students into a 'regular' (however regular is regular) classroom I have seen students' motivational drive increase. I am proud to say that I have seen some amazing students who were not willing to let their disabilities beat them.
Because students may have certain handicaps, we cannot put a limit on their possibilities. It is amazing to see what being considered "normal" can do to a child's confidence.
I am extremely glad I had an opportunity to discuss this issues with a group of future educators at this seminar. And I am grateful for Mr. Ron Henries who is always willing to share his wisdom and experience.
