I also had the opportunity to attend this seminar a few weeks ago and I feel like right now is the perfect time to talk about it. Having Dr. O'Quinn last year for Adolescent Literature, I attended the seminar having a pretty good idea of her passion for young people and how they are affected by the media and literature, but she never ceases to amaze me in presenting the issue. Probably the most influential or rather, the most shocking information she presents are different adds that she has found in popular magazines that present young girls in very provocative, sexual poses. While we have all seen these ads, she pulls one up that has young girls that are not yet even three years of age and shows it to prove that the media begins to use these girls at such an outrageously young age.

The information she presents is incredibly important to understand as a future teacher. While the media begins to influence students even before they enter school, I feel like it becomes an even larger problem in Middle and High school. I'm going to be a Middle School Teacher and I feel like it is incredibly important in this age group to keep in mind the impact that the media will have on my students. Middle School is a time when students are really struggling to find themselves, to figure out who they are and students are going to be INCREDIBLY SUSCEPTIBLE to the media. It is going to be my job to present them with literature and support to make them understand that what they are going through, what they are experiencing is okay, is completely natural.
Dr. O'Quinn's seminar was incredibly informative and eye-opening to understanding how the media tries to influence young girls and I really appreciate her bringing this huge issue to light, especially to future teachers.
