On Monday, November 2, I attended an Ashe County School Board meeting. There were several issues on the agenda for the meeting. The employee of the month was recognized (Ashe County High School technology teacher) and awarded a certificate. Additionally, the FFA chapter at Ashe County High School made a request to the board to attend a dairy cattle judging competition in Rowan County.

In my opinion, the most interesting aspect of the evening was when the 21st Century Learning Team (a team of teachers from Ashe County Middle School) made a special presentation. The 21st Century Learning Community was created by the funding of a state grant. This community was designed to reach out to students that are in danger of dropping out of school in the near future. The grant has provided laptops for each student as well as DSL internet connection in each of their homes. A parent liaison works with the teachers in order to ensure maximum productivity and effectiveness at home and at school. The students went on an overnight fieldtrip to Camp Broadstone to work on teambuilding skills. For most of the students, going to camp was the first time that they had ever left Ashe County. This program seems to be giving students the necessary resources to achieve. It will be very interesting to see if this program is actually successful in preventing drop outs.
