I attended the Queer Film Series this past Tuesday. We viewed a film that I had never heard of before, Hannah Free. This film is about an older lesbian woman, who is struggling for the rights to see her partner who is in the hospitial and in a coma. Her partner's daughter refuses to let Hannah see her. I won't tell the ending, in case anyone wishes to see it but I learned an incredible amount about gay health rights.
The discussion afterwards informed me of what a power of attorney is. This allows whoever's name you indicate to be the sole decision maker in your health choices, if you should not be able to make them yourself.
This is definitely something you could come into contact with in the classroom. You may have a student of the LGBT community or a student's parents may belong to the LGBT community. Every teacher will come in contact with a student of the LGBT community at some point in time so being aware of gay rights issues will be very helpful.
