| Post subject: | FInd Yosef a Holiday |
For one of my community events I attended this program put on by the Diversity Lecture Series. The Find Yosef a Holiday program was an interactive fair with several booths about different cultures holidays including Christmas, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Dia De Los Muertos, Boxing Day, and Egyptian Coptic Christmas. The most interesting of these to me was Diwali. Diwali is an Indian five day festival spanning October and November. It is a festival of lights celebrating the triumph of good over evil in a person. This holiday interested me because it seemed the most spiritually based, specifically addressed a person’s inner being, as opposed to Christmas today that has become consumed with material culture. I think that events like this remind people about how different the world still is. Despite the world shrinking in terms of technology, many people, particularly Americans, do not know enough or anything about cultures outside their own.An event like this raises new awareness to the cultures we share the world and even the country with. Learning about the rituals, traditions, and culture can only lead to a greater understanding between the nations of the world. I think some groups may have viewed this event as controversial, but I think it is necessary to be reminded of how much we don’t know about the rest of the world. |

My third event that I attended this semester was Find Yosef a Holiday! I have attended this event for three years now and have always enjoyed going to it. Every year it really opens my eyes to how much I really do not know about other cultures, people and Religions. I enjoy how people get really excited about their holidays and want to share their experiences with you. This year while walking around I started thinking about how I could use this in my classroom or even on a school level. With our ever growing diverse population in North Carolina schools this could be a great tool to teach children about the cultures of children around them. Also not to mention the free food and treats that are always fun to eat! |

I went to the community event called "Find Yosef a Holiday". It was held in the Student Union. Different campus organizations brought information about pretty much every different holiday considered during this holiday season. As soon as I walked in, there was a man at the door passing out a crossword puzzle to fill out while you go through the exhibit. Jackson, Tim and I walked through and found interesting information about holidays that I had never considered before. The obvious holidays were Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanza. The less obvious holidays were World AIDS day, Diwali, and Motown Christmas. My eyes were open to new cultures, political views, and people. Most of the presentations had hand outs for you to look at. One lady showed us how to make Chinese lanterns. I was very interested in MoTown Christmas and World AIDS day. At the stand for World AIDS day, they gave out free condoms, and at the Motown Christmas stand they were playing awesome 50's music. I would say that this exhibition expanded my mind past the usual holidays everyone celebrates. I finished the crossword puzzle and got a goody-bag full of treats and trinkets that will remind me of this event. |
