Originally this presentation was supposed to be tomorrow night, Wednesday October 21, but it got switched with the presentation on Cherokee culture. The speaker tonight was Ms. Lou Moore, a fifth grade science teacher. Ms. Moore really sought to highlight the qualities that define a leader in her presentation. She started off asking what makes a leader (or more specifically a good leader). The general consensus was that a leader needs confidence, an assertive approach to decision making, and the ability to work [well] with others. Of course there is some room for debate when it comes to the specifics about what makes a great leader. Depending on the situation, different personality traits may be more suitable than others. Ms. Moore than felt that we should all discover our own leadership qualities so she let us take an adapted form of the Myers Briggs Personality test. The questions were modified slightly to be geared less towards specific personality qualities and more towards classroom management. We ranked ourselves according to our preferences in regards to running our own classroom. With our classroom leadership personality results in order (mine was INFJ), we got to learn more about our specific qualities. It was really interesting to have a list of the traits that are attributed to our particular leadership type. The list also offered suggestions for ways to grow with the potential deficits of our types. It was really cool to see how our unique personality types could be very useful in a classroom. We also learned about some NC laws regarding teachers; a somewhat discouraging sidebar but incredibly useful to learn all the same. This seminar has given me a new way to consider different personality strengths and how they'll be beneficial in the classroom.
