Post subject:  LLS's Light the Night Walk in Raleigh NC

I participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" Walk in downtown Raleigh over Labor Day break. My entire family did this walk because we recently found out that my father has Leukemia. This is the first time I have done something like this with my family. It was very eye opening. We got to talk with many people battling the disease. The biggest thing that struck me was the number of people in wheelchairs. I have been doing walks for everything from diabetes to breast cancer but this was my first walk with maybe 30% of the people participating in wheelchairs. When we signed up for the race I pictured the same old walks we had always done, but this was different. I saw some of them having a hard time getting around and it made me think about how people who are seemingly normal have to struggle with things you can’t see. I hope that as a teacher I will keep in mind that there might be things outside of class that are affecting my students. Things that I can’t see but are very important, never assume things about students because I will probably be wrong. Everyone has something different on their plate and you don’t know what they are going through.
